In order to succeed in the Ute market, one must understand that there are numerous types of customers who all need a specific truck for their needs. Some might require a 4x2 workhorse for their business, others need an Overlanding or fun vehicle for weekend trips. Pickups are increasingly popular since they are incredibly versatile and can double as family daily commuter cars while being capable and dependable work tools. That is why Ford presented numerous grades of its best-selling Ranger line right from the start. One of the potentially popular models in the lineup is the 2022 Ranger Sport. This version combines the 4x4 drivetrain and optional engine with a sporty appearance that customers like. Let's see what it has to offer and why this ranger might be for you.
Like all next-gen Rangers, the Sport is a bit bigger than the outgoing model. With an overall length of 5370 mm, a width of 1918 mm and a height of 1884 mm. The wheelbase is also extended a bit to 3270 mm, and the ground clearance is a solid 235 mm. The gross vehicle mass (GVM) for the 2022 Ranger Sport is 3230, regardless of the version, but the curb weight is 2288 and 2346 kg (depending on the spec). Like all other 2022 Ranger models, the Sport can tow up to 3500 kg (braked) and has a payload of 708 kg (based on tare weight).

The basic specification of the 2022 Ranger Sport is similar to other models in the range. This means that average fuel consumption is 7.6 and 8.4 litres per 100 km with a fuel tank of 80 litres. Ford gave the Ranger Sport unique 18-inch wheels with all-season tyres for this grade. Since the Ranger Sport has a similar weight and the same engine and drive train options as the XLT, it has the same performance, which means 8.2 or 9.2 seconds to 100 km/h and around 170 km/h top speed. To put that into perspective, the 2022 Ranger Sport is slightly quicker than its segment competitors. Of course, when it comes to Utes, the performance is not the selling point, but it helps to know that you are slightly faster.
The interior is one area where Ranger Sport differs from the rest of the lineup. Of course, the overall design is the same, and there is an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver and a big 10.1-inch infotainment display on the centre console. However, all 2022 Ranger Sport models come with unique black, leather-accented seats with a "Sport" emblem that improves the interior's looks. The eight-way electric driver and six-way manual passenger seats are great, even for long-distance traveling. The wireless phone charging is a part of the standard package, as are interior details, floor mats, and rotary driving mode selector.
Under the bonnet of the 2022 Ford Ranger Sport buyers can find two engines, both modern diesels with plenty of power and torque. The base engine is a well-known 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel with 154 kW and 500 Nm of torque with average fuel consumption of 7.6 litres per 100 km. The optional engine is a powerful 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 184 kW and 600 Nm of torque which uses just 8.4 litres of fuel for 100 km of average driving. Both engines are delivered with a modern 10-speed automatic transmission and several predefined driving modes.

The 4x4 drivetrain is standard, regardless of the engine choice. However, if you opt for the 2.0-litre, you will get part-time 4x4, while buyers who choose the 3.0-litre V6 will get full-time 4x4 as standard. The only available body style is the standard double cab which is the most practical.
In order to emphasize the 2022 Ranger Sport's unique character, Ford gave this grade some recognizable exterior features. The front grille is dark gray with LED fog lights and LED headlights. There is a skid plate as standard and two front-mounted tow hooks. The 18-inch wheels and black interior trim complete the look, and the off-road screen is very useful for those buying the 2022 Ranger Sport to take off-road. There is a drop-in bed liner in the bed, and spray-in is an option; the tailgate has lift assistance and a power lock.
In terms of safety and security, the 2022 Ranger Sport comes fully loaded with an advanced alarm system, nine airbags, intelligent adaptive cruise control and with blind spot monitoring with trailer coverage. The DSC system is also part of the standard package as a rearview camera. However, the 360-degree camera system is optional. If you want this feature, it is best to purchase the Touring package, which includes a brake controller, 360-degree camera, zone lighting and puddle light projection.
The colour palette for the next-gen Ranger Sport starts with no-cost Alpine White and has five more colours, all of which cost extra. The metallic hues include Aluminium Silver and Meteor Gray, followed by Sedona Orange and Shadow Black. Of course, the characteristic Blue Lightning is part of the lineup.
The 2022 Ford Ranger Sport is an off-road inclined model that can be as capable as Wildtrak or Raptor if adequately modified. That is why it is interesting to see what kind of accessories are available. Although this is a brand new model, most dedicated components are still in development. Still, we can expect that very soon, various companies will start offering gear like side steps, bull bars, suspension and brake components, wheels, tyres, graphics packages, snorkel intakes, and performance chips. Of course, let's not forget the LED lights, spotlights, light bars, etc.

As a part of the next-gen Ford Ranger lineup, Sport is set to be released in August of 2022, along with the other models.
Even though the specifications, design, features and performance of the new 2022 Ranger Sport are very appealing, the base vehicle (equipped with 2.0-litre diesel) is pretty high at $69,676 (drive-away price). The 3.0-litre V6 version, without any options, will set you back almost $73,000. If you want a Touring package, it will cost an additional $900; if you want any colour other than white, add $650 more. We feel this is too close to Ranger Wildtrak to justify the price.
